Hi friends,

I wanted to share a quick update from the past year and what’s ahead.

In fall 2024, I lost the use of my arms and legs and began using a wheelchair with head controls. While I’m losing core strength, I’m grateful I can still breathe and swallow on my own. I use breathing assistance at night, but nothing during the day.

I continue to enjoy swimming, meals with friends, cards, reading, and—of course—a glass of wine and good conversation.

Now for the exciting news: on November 2, I’ll be in the Bass Pro Shops Half Marathon in Springfield as the “Commander” of a running wheelchair, pushed by Kristine, Nathan, and Jonathan. Crossing that finish line is a dream I never thought possible.

This adventure is made possible by Team Gleason, founded by former NFL player Steve Gleason who was diagnosed with ALS in 2011. Their mission is to empower people living with ALS to keep living productive, purposeful and meaningful lives. Since 2011, they’ve provided over $55 million in equipment, services, and adventures.

Because of Team Gleason, I’ll be running with my family instead of watching from the sidelines—and that means the world to me. I’m also raising funds to support their work. If you’re able, please consider donating and sharing with others. Every bit helps in the fight against ALS.

With gratitude and love,
Mary Decker
